Sweden and Denmark pledge to fight gang crime
Sweden has long struggled with gang crime and youth crime. In recent years, the fight between the criminal groups there has become increasingly cruel and bloody, so that there are regular reports of shootings and bombings in the capital Stockholm and other cities.
However, in recent months, Swedish gang violence has also spread to neighboring Denmark. Danish Justice Minister Peter Hummelgord recently said that at least 25 cases of Swedish youth being recruited by Danish criminal groups to commit crimes in Denmark have been recorded since April.
The Danish police said that Swedish youths have been responsible for various crimes such as hand grenade explosions or murder. Danish public television reported this month that one murder can earn between 300,000 and 500,000 Swedish kroner (26,000-43,000 euros).
Juhan Ulsson, head of the Swedish National Police Operations Department, said that Swedish youths are usually recruited to commit crimes in Denmark on the Internet.
“Criminal gangs have created chat groups where they post information and attract young people who are interested in crime and find it exciting, and encourage people to get in touch if they want to investigate different crimes to do And as soon as you say I’m interested, they will contact you securely and the real problem will begin,” Ulsson told Swedish Public Radio.
Copenhagen has criticized Sweden for increasing gang violence in Denmark. Justice Minister Hummelgord even said that this is the result of Sweden’s uncontrolled migration policy.
Hummelgord met with Swedish Justice Minister Gunnar Strömer on Wednesday to discuss the situation. After the meeting, the ministers announced that both countries would do more to fight cross-border crime.
Strömer explained several things that will be done to try to deal with the problem at hand.
“We will deploy Swedish police officers in Denmark and Danish police officers in Sweden so that we can exchange information in real time to increase the number of arrests and ideally to prevent to put on crimes. We also work together to improve relations with third countries where we know there are gang leaders. We are now very successful in arresting people who are guilty of crimes, but those who ordered the crimes are higher up in the food chain,” Strömer told Swedish public television.
Strömer said that Sweden could introduce harsher sentences for minors for committing serious crimes.
Denmark and Sweden have also pledged to ban tech companies whose communication platforms are used by gangs to recruit Swedish youths to commit crimes in Denmark.
