Excellent news for regional fencing came from Costa Rica, where the Pan American Children’s Championship was held. There, the athlete from the O’Higgins region, Pedro Yáñez de Souza, won the silver medal in his respective category at just 9 years old.
Pedro, a student at the Colegio San Francisco de Machalí and member of the O’Higgins Fencing Club, traveled to Central America thanks to the efforts of parents and family members, in addition to the support of the Regional Government, and had an outstanding performance.
In his weapon, Epee, the little boy competed in the final of the Children’s A series against a competitor from the United States, finishing in second place and thus taking the silver medal.
Likewise, Pedro Yáñez, performed in a category higher than his own, in Under 11, where he managed to enter the top 16, finally occupying 11th place after passing one round.
Mauricio Yáñez, Pedro’s father, told El Rancagüino that “we are very happy, we thank the governor for the funds that were approved, and the team that worked to make the project bear fruit.”
It should be noted that the athlete will arrive on national soil on Saturday to celebrate this medal with his family, friends, and classmates and from the fencing club.
