34-year-old Laura has been suffering from the incurable nerve disease CRPS, a complex pain syndrome, for almost two years. “When Laura woke up from the anesthesia after a planned disc operation, the disease was triggered – initially in her right leg,” reports Krending-Hambach. Constant severe pain, paralysis, discoloration of the foot and open wounds are the consequences of this disease for Laura, who has been in a wheelchair ever since, she continues.

34-year-old Laura is dependent on a wheelchair due to a serious illness.

The disease also broke out in her right arm at the beginning of 2023 when her sister-in-law caught her hand in the car door through carelessness. Laura was also mentally exhausted and attempted suicide, reports Krending-Hambach. But the family – her brother Benedikt – and the three children aged 8, 9 and 15 are also suffering greatly from the situation.

Laura worked as a school assistant until the fateful operation in October 2022, after which she developed CRPS. Now not only is part of the family income lost, but the illness has also created many new costs, most of which the family has to bear themselves.

Large individual donation enables installation of a stair lift

A ray of hope: Thanks to a generous individual donor, a stair lift has now been installed in the house of her brother and sister-in-law, says Krending-Hambach. Before that, her brother had to laboriously transport his wife, who was in a wheelchair, up and down the stairs from the bedroom on the first floor using a kind of hand truck.

The family lives in Kirchlenglern. “My brother moved there many years ago for love,” says 39-year-old Krending-Hambach. She and her brother grew up in Holtensen.

Side effect of the campaign: contact and exchange with other sick people

The fact that the fundraising campaign has raised more than 15,000 euros in such a short time is overwhelming, says the woman from Eldagsen. The family needs a larger car to be able to transport the wheelchair. Changes still need to be made in the house, such as widening the door frames. And Maike Krending-Hambach hopes that money will also be raised for a short vacation for the family, so that they can forget their worries for a few days.

In addition to the money collected, the fundraising campaign also has another very positive aspect, says the woman from Eldagsen: her sister-in-law has come into contact with other people suffering from CRPS and has received valuable tips.
