Bettina Zoteva is one of those people who have been in the public eye for the last 20 years. She held increasingly responsible positions – news anchor on BNT, spokesperson of the BSP campaign headquarters in 1996 in the presidential race (they did not win), spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during the time of Daniel Mitov (she failed to make him a favorite of society), media advisor to Georges Ganchev (we remembered him as a political clown), public relations officer of the Minister of Finance Simeon Dyankov (brought hatred towards the entire government), advisor in the office of Ekaterina Zaharieva (tried to involve her in the current mess), secretary of the issues of relations with the media and communication strategies in the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Bulgaria in the European Union (her desire to remove the installation of the Czech artist David Cherny, who had presented Bulgaria as a toilet, was remembered here). An excellent career!
When her scandal happened with the threats to Kudrinka Kudrinova, I asked myself if I should react at all. So Bettina Zoteva is nothing and no problem for our struggling country, eaten away by poverty, poor health care, education ruining the future of our children, frequent lack of justice, etc. Then I was like, “Oh no! It is exactly the place from which to start.” If we do not heal ourselves as a community, we cannot overcome serious problems. We have to decide as a community what is acceptable and what is not. Here, we recently resolved the issue of the inadmissibility of fascist salutes. Now we have a new case study.
I sat down to watch the recording with her participation on Nova TV. If I had any doubts as to whether an apology was enough, now I know – it is not. The member of the SEM Betina Zoteva behaved arrogantly, spoke “you” to the interviewing journalist Viktor Nikolaev – in an attempt to familiarize him or pressure him emotionally, no i know I hardly manage to follow the jumps in Mrs. Zoteva’s thought during the interview, but I attribute it to the stress of the situation.
Her thesis is that the question asked by journalist Kudrinka Kudrinova is fake news. Since when are questions news? Am I behind the profession, or is the question one that ends in a question mark, and the answer can be yes or no. However, Zoteva will sue her for defamation. Does it mean that asking a question by a journalist can be prosecuted? This is a huge problem for our society! And in general, what does a person who does not know this do in SEM?
But still, the sensitive question many of us ask ourselves is: if an empowered person can publicly and with impunity behave in this aggressive way, how far could he go in a non-public situation? And the structures that have more power and opportunities for pressure, what could they do to a harmless journalist – DANS, prosecutor’s office, court? Because SEM often only has an ascertaining function, at most a fine to take. Of course, we console ourselves with the thought that Mrs. Zoteva is an exception, but if so, we would like her colleagues to confirm it through some action.
Is it permissible for a member of a media regulatory body to threaten a journalist? CEM should officially answer this question. I congratulate the Union of Journalists and the Association of European Journalists for the position. I hope this will give courage to other guild members to seek their rights. And it’s not like there aren’t any problems. Our free speech ranking has been collapsing every year and I wouldn’t say it doesn’t affect them! We are currently in 109th place, in the top 10 are Jamaica and Costa Rica! So we are far behind them.

Every now and then a public official is named as a ladybug – in agriculture, in foreign policy… This march of ladybugs has exhausted our society and more and more people are putting down their hands, grabbing their luggage and evacuating themselves and their children away from here. I wish this situation would solve another sore problem – not to point ladybugs only when they are from the opposing political team and never from ours. This is insulting to all of us involved in this game.
If we point to the chalga and mutrization only in the opposing team, nothing else will happen, except that the match will continue until the opponents are completely exhausted. The march of the ladybugs must stop on both sides. These are people with a seemingly successful career, who have passed by some profession just to ensure their luxurious existence at the expense of society. Often they look “smiling, successful and amazing”. And those who dig every day at the levels of their professional field are without the possibility of growth, simply because the places above are reserved for a loyal person of the relevant party leadership or economic circles. It is difficult to point a finger at such successful people who march every day on television and turn real professional workers into invisible people.
