Jamie Vardy mocks Tottenham fans on Premier League return

At 37, Vardy had not played in pre-season but was named in the starting eleven in this opening game. During his time on the pitch, he showed his finest skills, scoring with a header in the 57th minute, just after being seen enjoying an energy drink in the dressing room.

When he was substituted in the 79th minute, he was cheered by the home fans, but also provoked the Tottenham supporters. As he came off, he gestured towards them by pointing to the Premier League crest on his shirt and raising a finger, alluding to the title he won with Leicester in 2016. He then made a zero sign with his finger, reminding them that the London club has yet to achieve such success.

Vardy commented on the interaction with opposing fans: “You get a bit of uneasiness during the game, but it’s part of football. As long as they can handle it when I give them the same back, that’s what matters.” He was also involved in a verbal exchange with Tottenham defender Cristian Romero, which added to the tension of the game.

Despite his age, Vardy says he feels in top form. “I see age as just a number. As long as I look after myself and my legs keep feeling good, I will continue as long as possible,” he said. He stressed that his focus on recovery is key to his performance, feeling in top form up until around the 65th minute of the match.
