Sparta Rotterdam has learned with sadness of the passing of Hans Eijkenbroek. The former defender, assistant coach and temporary head coach was 84 years old.

Hans Eijkenbroek is one of the legendary names in the history of Sparta Rotterdam. He played 296 matches in the Eredivisie for the Kasteelclub and also several matches in the European Cup and KNVB Cup. The latter prize was won in 1966. Eijkenbroek played 18 times for the Dutch National Team.

During Sparta’s 100th anniversary in 1988, Hans Eijkenbroek was appointed Member of Merit. Eijkenbroek was also the holder of the famous Delft Blue Plate, which he was awarded again on his 80th birthday.

Sparta Rotterdam loses a former captain who unfortunately was no longer able to come to Het Kasteel in recent years, but who always felt Spartan. The club wishes the relatives of Hans Eijkenbroek much strength in coping with this loss and will play with black armbands during the home match against Feyenoord on Sunday. A minute’s silence will also be observed.

Five years ago, Louis Du Moulin wrote ‘Kasteelkanjers’ about Hans Eijkenbroek.
