You may remember Danielle Fishel as Topanga Lawrence in the 90s series ‘Learning to Live’ ( Boy Meets World).
What is happening with Topanga today?
Fishel took advantage of the space of affection and trust to tell her audience about the difficult situation she is going through: an early diagnosis of breast cancer.
Danielle Fishel, Topanga in ‘Learning to Live’ has cancer
Danielle had previously wondered what it would be like to suffer from something like breast cancer. However, upon receiving her diagnosis she was faced with a different – and gentler – reality than she had always imagined would come with the disease.
“If you’ve ever had those thoughts in your life when someone close to you is diagnosed with cancer, somewhere in the back of your mind you think, ‘What would I do if it were me? What would I do in this situation? ’ For some reason, I always thought I would suffer in silence. I would get the diagnosis and I wouldn’t tell anyone. I would only tell my small, small group. And then I would accept it. And when I got over it, I would tell people.”
The actress, in fact, relied first on her family: her husband Jensen Karp, and her children: Adler, 5 years old, and Keaton, 3.
But after thinking about it, she decided not to hide it from the rest of the world. Danielle shared as much of her experience as she could with her followers on her radio show.
Topanga from ‘Boy Meets World’ shared details of her cancer to raise awareness of the cause
“I was recently diagnosed with DCIS, which stands for ductal carcinoma in situ, which is a form of breast cancer. It’s very, very, very early, technically it’s stage zero.”
The reason she decided to speak publicly about it was to raise awareness about the cause and the importance of regular check-ups.
“They caught it so, so, so early that I’m going to be fine. I want to share this because I hope it encourages anyone to go for checkups. If it’s time for your appointment, if you’ve never had an appointment before, go. If you have to find out you have cancer, find out when it’s stage zero, if possible.”
Danielle, like many women, was able to detect her condition early thanks to a routine mammogram. This procedure is an X-ray of the breasts that can find signs of cancer even in its earliest stages.
Although Danielle admits that she still doesn’t have all the answers about what will happen regarding her treatment, she is relieved to have been able to reduce the damage by detecting the disease in time. For this reason, she emphasized the importance of always going for check-ups and check-ups, since they can save lives.
