From Thursday, September 12th to Tuesday, September 24th, 2024 presents the LVR Industrial Museum Zinkfabrik Altenberg in Cooperation with the cinema in Walzenlager the debut film “Fossil” by director and author Henning Beckhoff. Between open-cast mining, giant excavators and even greater dashed hopes, the drama tells of changing times and generational conflicts.
After forty years in the job, Michael, a dedicated open-pit miner, feels cheated out of the recognition of his life’s work. Robbed of all certainties, as coal mining is to be stopped and the huge pit is to be converted into a reservoir, he tries to get his colleagues to protest. A protest against his superiors and against the “eco-freaks”, among whom he also counts his daughter. Trapped in his despair, however, he increasingly loses support.
A carefully developed milieu drama with a main character whose behavior is often offensive, but whose stubbornness also has a tragic component. The objective production avoids anything sentimental and realistically depicts the inevitable disappearance of a world.
