Whatsapp thrives on users being able to stay in touch with friends, family or work colleagues with just a few clicks. Most users have hundreds of entries in their list. But getting in as a new contact is going to be more difficult. The messenger service is planning a drastic measure.

Whatsapp is taking action on personal security and data protection. In a major update, the company is giving its users the option of protecting themselves from unwanted messages and contact attempts using an access PIN. This innovation is a clear step towards further strengthening the privacy of the millions of Whatsapp users worldwide.
Whatsapp introduces PIN number
At least that is the positive version of this measure. But you could also say: With the PIN, WhatsApp wants or needs to solve a problem that it itself created. Why is that?

According to the expert blog “WABetaInfo”, Whatsapp is working on the possibility of introducing user names. This change would allow Whatsapp users to be contacted via the messenger regardless of their telephone number – namely via their user name. However, in many cases this would be easier to guess or find out than a telephone number. This would open the door to spam attacks or unwanted contact.
Measure against spam messages
To prevent this from happening, WhatsApp wants to introduce the PIN. Users can then pass this on to new contacts along with their username, thus ensuring that they do not receive any spam or unsolicited messages.

Whatsapp initially introduced the innovations on a test basis in the Android beta version 2.24.18.2. However, everything indicates that the new functions will not be mandatory. The exact date of the nationwide introduction is still unknown.
