English song #1: The Beatles – Hey Jude (1968)

Hey Jude

Author / Composer:

John Lennon et Paul McCartney

Iconic lyrics:

“Hey Jude, don’t make it bad ; Take a sad song and make it better ; Remember to let her into your heart ; Then you can start to make it better ; Hey Jude, don’t be afraid ; You were made to go out and get her ; The minute you let her under your skin ; Then you begin to make it better ; Oh-oh-oh, and anytime you feel the pain ; Hey Jude, ; Don’t carry the world upon your shoulders ; For well you know that it’s a fool ; Who plays it cool ; By making his world a little colder”

How can we talk about English-speaking musical culture without mentioning the Beatles, the iconic group of the 60s? It was in 1968 that the quartet recorded the song “Hey Jude”, composed by Paul McCartney.

This song, filled with kindness, was written for Julian Lennon, John Lennon’s son, to support him during his parents’ divorce. The seven-minute track was the longest song of the era to reach number one in the UK charts. “Hey Jude” remains the band’s biggest hit, selling over eight million copies.

The hit continues to be part of our musical repertoire and has been covered by many artists, such as Elvis Presley, The Temptations, Petula Clark and many others.

We’ve all heard the song “Wonderwall” somewhere.

Whether it’s on the radio, listening to a record from our father, stealing our brother’s old iPod or simply in our playlist because it’s an essential piece. The title is inspired by George Harrison’s album Wonderwall Music.

The media had announced that the song had been written by Meg Mathews, Noel Gallagher’s ex-girlfriend, but the singer denied this hypothesis by explaining that the hit is not about his girlfriend but about an imaginary friend who comes to help you. Sold over twenty-two million copies, the title has been performed by many artists, including Indochine, Mike Flowers Pops, Ryan Adams and Jay-Z.

“Dear Slim, I wrote you but still ain’t callin’ ; I left my cell, my pager, and my home phone at the bottom ; I sent two letters back in autumn, you must not-a got ’em ; There probably was a problem at the post office or somethin’ ; Sometimes I scribble addresses too sloppy when I jot ’em ; But anyways, fuck it, what’s been up? Man how’s your daughter? ; My girlfriend’s pregnant too, I’m ’bout to be a father ; If I have a daughter, guess what I’m a call her? ; I’ma name her Bonnie ; I read about your Uncle Ronnie too I’m sorry ; I had a friend kill himself over some bitch who didn’t want him ; I know you probably hear this everyday, but I’m your biggest fan”

It’s the music you listen to in the car, your head resting on the window sill. Stan is a song from Eminem’s third album, The Marshall Mathers LP, released in 2000. Although the rapper is known for many songs, Stan remains his most famous song.
