Turkey’s threats to cancel Turkish Stream are currently unrealizable – 2024-08-19 20:47:59

/ world today news/ After the violation of the airspace of Turkey by a Russian plane, the authorities of this country for the first time threatened to stop the implementation of the joint gas project “Turkish Stream”. According to experts from RBTH (“Russian Diary”), the threat is not real for now, but the future of the Russian gas flow will largely depend on Turkey’s position.

“Stopping the Turkish Stream project precisely because of the dissatisfaction of the Turkish side with Russia’s policy in Syria is hardly possible, especially because of Turkey’s interest in the supply of resources and the prospects for increasing Turkey’s role in the EU energy market after the implementation of this project”, said Ivan Kapitonov – associate professor from the Institute of Civil Service and Management of the Russian Academy of National Economy and Civil Service. According to him, rather the Turkish side wants an increase in discounts for the purchase of Russian gas than actually threatens to cancel the project.

For his part, according to the analyst of IC “Premier” Sergey Ilin, the statement of Recep Erdogan carries a political message rather than an economic one, and is aimed at the domestic audience. “Turkey imports from Russia about 60% of its gas (27 billion cubic meters for 2014) and regardless of the formal availability of alternative options, in reality it will be able to replace this volume only if it creates new infrastructure, builds new gas pipelines and terminals for receiving compressed natural gas”, adds Ivan Kapitonov.
