Cerro Porteño and Olimpia draw 1-1 in a new edition of the ‘superclásico’ in Paraguay

Asuncion, Aug 18 (EFE).- Cerro Porteño and Olimpia tied 1-1 on Sunday in a new edition of the Paraguayan soccer superclassic coinciding with the sixth date of the Clausura Tournament, led by the 2 de Mayo club.

Argentine Lucas Pratto gave the team coached by his compatriot Martín Palermo the lead in the 39th minute, while Robert Piris Da Motta equalised with a penalty in the 84th minute.

Pratto kicked a cross from Lorenzo Melgarejo from the middle of the opponent’s area that almost passed between the arms of Brazilian goalkeeper Jean Fernandes.

The score was tied after the penalty awarded by referee Juan Gabriel Benítez in favor of the team led by the Spaniard Manolo Jiménez following a foul against Gabriel Aguayo, who was advancing quickly towards the Decano’s goal.

This is the seventh consecutive draw between the historical rivals of Paraguayan football, who faced each other this Sunday at the General Pablo Rojas stadium, La Nueva Olla, in Asunción.

This is the 324th edition of the superclásico that both teams have played in since 1913, with a record of 112 victories for the Ciclón de Barrio Obrero and 110 triumphs for the Franjeado.

With the result of this Sunday, May 2, the city of Pedro Juan Caballero is placed as leader with 14 points, followed by Olimpia (12) and Cerro Porteño (11).

At the start of the sixth round, 2 de Mayo beat Sportivo Trinidense, ninth in the table, 1-0 on Friday.

Also on Friday, Sportivo Luqueño, which is in sixth place, defeated Guaraní, in seventh place, 2-1.

While Sol de América, which is second to last, fell 1-2 to visiting Tacuary, in fifth position.

The date will end this Monday with the clash between the bottom team Sportivo Ameliano and Libertad (10).

Both teams will face each other again on Thursday, on the occasion of the second of the two matches scheduled for the round of 16 of the Copa Sudamericana. EFE
