Stéphane Bern: Monarchy expert comments on the Grand Ducal takeover

When Grand Duke Henri announced on June 23 that he would appoint his son Guillaume as deputy in October, everyone was surprised, including Stéphane Bern. The Franco-Luxembourgish presenter commented on this ongoing succession. “This was decided in consultation with all those involved, you can feel the family harmony,” commented the presenter. “The announcement was very discreet, reserved and simple – a statement that suits the Grand Duke.” “It is the sovereign’s decision,” stressed the expert on crowned heads. “He believes that the time has come to give up his power and he is bringing his actions into line with his words.”

In monarchies, a transfer of power can take from a few months to several decades, but for the monarchy expert, it could happen more quickly in Luxembourg. “Here, they don’t wait for the ruler to die,” explained Stéphane Bern. “The transfer is likely to take between two and four years. Fresh blood is needed to take over the reins.”

In any case, Grand Duke Henri will celebrate his 25th anniversary on the throne next October. “We will certainly celebrate,” assures the Franco-Luxembourgish presenter, who may travel to the event.
