Mexico CityFormer Chihuahua Governor Javier Corral Jurado was granted temporary protection by federal courts to avoid being arrested or forced to appear before any authority, after the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office of the State of Chihuahua obtained an arrest warrant against him for embezzlement aggravated by an alleged diversion of 98 million pesos.
The Fifth District Court, based in Mexico City, headed by Judge Patricia Marcela Diez Cerda, granted a provisional suspension that prevents the performance of acts of deprivation of liberty, which imply compliance with an arrest or appearance order.
To grant him the benefit of temporary suspension, the former governor of Chihuahua in the 2016-2021 period, and current senator elected by Morena, paid a guarantee of 120 thousand pesos.
The appeal for protection was filed on Thursday and the precautionary measure was granted on Friday, although the registration was not reported by the court through the list of agreements of the Federal Judicial Council (CJF).
Last Thursday, personnel from the Chihuahua Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office attempted to arrest Corral Jurado at the Gin Gin restaurant in the Roma neighborhood, so that he could be brought before a judge in Chihuahua to answer charges of acts of corruption committed during his term in office.
When Chihuahua police officers were attempting to arrest him, the head of the Mexico City Attorney General’s Office, Ulises Lara, arrived at the scene and suspended the actions against Javier Corral Jurado.
