Last season, Fortuna was just one step away from the final in Berlin. This time, they had no chance against a third division team.
Last season they were semi-finalists, this time they were eliminated in the first round: Fortuna Düsseldorf was eliminated from the DFB Cup after a very weak performance. The second division team suffered a well-deserved 0:2 (0:1) defeat at the clearly superior third division team Dynamo Dresden on Sunday.

Fortuna didn’t get into the game at all against their opponents from a lower league and were just playing behind for half an hour. Robin Meißner missed the first big chance for Dynamo with a header from a corner (8th minute), then former Düsseldorf player Christoph Daferner scored (17th minute) – the Fortuna defense, which had been unbeaten in two league games, repeatedly looked insecure in the atmospheric Rudolf Harbig Stadium.
Thioune: “We deserved to lose”
Fortuna coach Daniel Thioune took his team to task after the final whistle. “I have to say that our performance was extremely disappointing,” he said in Sky-Interview. “At the end of the day, we completely deserved to lose this game.” In pouring rain, he answered reporters’ questions and admitted: “I and we as a team are completely justified in standing in the rain after 90 minutes.”
Dresden, on the other hand, set a new personal DFB Cup record on Sunday evening. The hosts shot at the Düsseldorf goal 27 times – more than ever before in a DFB Cup match.

Kownacki return confirmed
Düsseldorf came out of the break with two great chances, Dynamo goalkeeper Tim Schreiber made brilliant saves against Jona Niemiec and Felix Klaus (46th/48th). Dresden then recovered and had their own opportunities to decide the game – Meißner completed a counterattack (69th).
Thioune had previously confirmed the return of Düsseldorf’s record signing Dawid Kownacki from Werder Bremen. “There are still final details to be clarified, then I can say: Dawid, welcome home,” said Thioune. In 22 Bundesliga appearances for Bremen, the Polish striker had not collected a single point.
