Even the most placid of athletes can sometimes lose their cool. Eliminated by Gael Monfils from the 2nd round of the Cincinnati tournament (4-6, 7-6, 6-4) and visibly very annoyed by the turn of events, Carlos Alcaraz has lost its temper.
Just after the two-hour mark of play – in a match that took place over two days due to the rain – the Spaniard smashed his racket in anger after losing a point.
A bloody behavior, which Alcaraz is not accustomed to, which obviously made the rounds of the web in the wake. Pointed out by some for a lack of sportsmanship, Carlito felt compelled to apologize on his social media: “I apologize for my attitude yesterday which was not correct. This kind of gesture should not be made on a tennis court. I am human, my nerves were on edge and it is sometimes very difficult to control yourself when your heart rate is so high.”
Even though his victory was overshadowed by Alcaraz’s outburst, Gael Monfils became the second oldest player in history to beat a member of the Top 3 in the ATP rankings behind Roger Federer.
