Born on October 31, 1958 near Annecy, Jeannie Longo is a living legend of cycling in France. Now 65 years old, the champion still continues to take part in bike races. On Saturday, August 17, 2024, she took part in the Prix cycliste de Lentigny, organized on the roads of the Loire, as part of a FSGT (Sports and Gymnastics Federation of Work) cycling stage. Unfortunately, Jeannie Longo did not manage to finish this race. In fact, the rider lost control of her bike when she hit a pothole. She injured her knee and had to be taken to Roanne hospital by the firefighters. On site, the champion received no less than 30 stitches, as reported by the regional daily Progress . Besides Jeannie Longo, a second cyclist was injured during this race.

Indeed, barely a quarter of an hour after the 65-year-old cyclist fell, another person involved in this famous race injured his arm near the town of Lentigny. After a twenty-minute interruption following this second incident, the race was able to resume before reaching its end. The day before her accident, Jeannie Longo had given an interview to Parisian regarding the Women’s Tour de France. While she was the last French cyclist to have won a stage victory in this race in 1989, this is no longer the case since Friday, August 16, 2024. On that day, French rider Cédrine Kerbaol won solo in the sixth stage of the Women’s Tour de France.Well, you call me about the young girl. We watched the stage with my husband. And she ran perfectly. What do you want to know?“, Jeannie Longo first said when contacted by journalists from Parisian.

I’m really happy for this little girl. At the end of the race, my husband and I were saying to each other: ‘But someone has to counter after Labous’ attack What are they waiting for?’ And we saw her go. It took nerve. But I didn’t believe it until the end because only 30 seconds with a false flat finish was tight. But a big congratulations to her. Just don’t say she’s my heir, it doesn’t mean anything.“, Jeannie Longo then declared. The champion, however, qualified the feat achieved by Cédrine Kerbaol. “I don’t know if we should compare. We were competing in a real Tour de France. and it didn’t last a single week“, she was keen to clarify.
