FC Bayern Munich, News: Thomas Müller and Joshua Kimmich talk about Leon Goretzka

Leon Goretzka was not in the Munich squad for FC Bayern’s 4-0 win in the first round of the DFB Cup against second division club SSV Ulm. The 29-year-old midfielder was not injured and probably has no future with the German record champions despite his contract running until 2026.

After sporting director Max Eberl had already commented on Goretzka before the match, Thomas Müller, Joshua Kimmich and sporting director Christoph Freund were also asked about it after the victory at the Donaustadion.

“Leon is currently in a difficult situation. But he is still training excellently, that must be made clear. If you look at the squad and then take into account the decisions of the coach and the club, there are always difficult cases. Leon is one of us. He shows us as teammates how important we are to him – and that is the same for both sides,” said Müller at Sport1.

“He reacted very professionally, but of course he’s not entirely happy at the moment,” said Freund. “It’s not an easy situation, but he’s a complete professional and trains really, really well. You have to respect how he’s dealing with it.”

Kimmich showed in ZDF-Interview Sympathy for his teammate: “In the end, I can’t decide. From a player’s perspective, I can say that I really enjoy being on the pitch with Leon. Everyone knows that we are very good friends, so I feel a little sorry for him. In the end, I’m not the one who can make the decision, but the club, and I don’t know what kind of discussions were held.”

Goretzka has been a Bayern player since 2018 and has almost always played in central midfield during these six years. In 221 appearances for the club, the Bochum native scored 40 goals and provided 46 assists.
