More and more people are using public transport in Hamburg. The increase in passenger numbers on Hochbahn and VHH buses is particularly noticeable, as the transport authority announced.
“The year 2023 was the record year in Hamburg in terms of the number of bus passengers,” authority spokesman Dennis Krämer told the German Press Agency. “Never before have so many people traveled on HVV buses.”
More than 320 million passengers
According to this, a total of 321 million passengers were counted last year. For comparison: In the pre-Corona year of 2019, the number was around 290 million.
And the trend is continuing – also with the other public transport services of the underground and suburban trains and vhh.mobility, said Krämer. In both May and June of this year, an average of more than 2.7 million passengers were counted daily on working days. In April, the figure was almost 2.8 million, a good 200,000 more than in the previous year.
“The service offensives of recent years, the expansion of tangential bus connections and the expansion of Xpress bus services, in conjunction with the attractive HVV Germany ticket, have had a positive impact on demand for S-Bahn, Hochbahn and VHH,” said the authority spokesman.
More kilometres travelled by bus and train
According to the information, the number of passengers on buses and trains had already increased by around 450,000 to 2.7 million per working day by the timetable change in 2023/2024 compared to the previous change. The subway recorded an increase of 120,000, the S-Bahn by 79,000 and the buses by 247,000 passengers.
Compared to 2023, buses and trains have also traveled more kilometers this year, said Krämer. “In the first half of 2024, the subway traveled around 20,000 train kilometers more than in the first half of 2023, the S-Bahn around 100,000 train kilometers and the buses over 700,000 kilometers more.”
