An intense political confrontation broke out after the extraordinary inter-ministerial meeting led by Kyriakos Mitsotakis, at the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection. The prime minister stated that he was satisfied with the effort that was made, causing the strong reaction of the opposition, which speaks of the disintegration of the state and calls for the removal of the minister of civil protection, Vassilis Kikilia.
Mitsotakis satisfaction
“Every year we try to become better, with the conditions unfortunately becoming more and more difficult”, the Prime Minister said, according to information, during the meeting. Kyriakos Mitsotakis, according to the same sources, reportedly expressed his satisfaction with the great effort made in the field by the Civil Protection forces and pointed out the improved coordination between the co-authorized bodies and services, which is an achievement for its operation state and its structures.
“We will not allow the significant effort that has been made this year in Civil Protection to be deconstructed”, the Prime Minister emphasized and pointed out that “we have full confidence in those who handle the operational activity of the aerial means”, while he emphasized the fact that the allocation of aerial means is now by the officials who have knowledge of the subject and based on specific operational criteria”.
It is obvious that the government is trying to downplay the fact that a fire that broke out in Varnavas reached Chalandri, burning everything. There is also an attempt to play down the damage caused by the fiery conflagration. According to what was said in the inter-ministerial office “less than 10% of the burned areas are forest lands” and the buildings that have suffered damage “are less than 100, with most of them not being houses”.
Fierce attack from Kasselakis
After the end of the inter-ministerial meeting, the president of SYRIZA, Stefanos Kasselakis, fiercely attacked the Prime Minister, while he had already requested the dismissal of Kikilia.
Referring to the statements of Mr. Mitsotakis, Mr. Kasselakis said: “I didn’t believe it when I read it, but this explains why, since the morning, propaganda has been trying to give the sign of successful management. It is the new Mitsotakis narrative: We will say how much we succeeded so they forget how much we failed,” he noted in a post on social media, adding: “This is the difference between the first and second four years. After North Evia: Declaration, “my fellow citizens” and lowered eyes. After the first ever fire invasion of the urban fabric of Athens (after first burning everything in its path for 40 kilometers): Arrogance, conceit and an operation to invert reality”.
“”We will not allow the significant effort made this year in Civil Protection to be deconstructed”, added the Prime Minister. Kyriakos Mitsotakis will not allow any affected, homeless citizen who lost his life, to spoil his legend. The myth of Greece 2.0 which has become Greece Point Zero”, said Mr. Kasselakis pointing out: “Understaffing, lack of equipment, completely ineffective coordination. This is the Mitsotakis Civil Protection, of which he can be proud, but not every citizen who loves and cares for his homeland”.
SYRIZA: Cowardice and incompetence
SYRIZA also launched an attack on the Prime Minister, whom it accuses of “audacity”. The audacity and irresponsibility of Mr. Mitsotakis are unprecedented, SYRIZA-PS emphasizes in a statement. “Really, the Mitsotakis government did not know for five years that the conditions are difficult? We had to get to the middle of August and 100,000 acres, but also dozens of houses and businesses within Attica, would have burned for him to realize it?”, he adds.
PaSoK: Mitsotakis is inadequate and arrogant
PASOK-Movement of Change commented on the inter-ministerial meeting at the Ministry of Climate Crisis regarding the big fire in northeastern Attica.
More specifically, in Harilaou Trikoupi they focused on the fact that Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed his satisfaction for the great effort made on the fiery front.
“If the Prime Minister in his first public statement after the devastating fire that was put out by Varnava in Halandri, declares that he is satisfied, then only one comment remains: Inadequate, intemperate and arrogant”, says the relevant comment of PASOK.
“How incompetent the Mitsotakis government is is the most obvious problem, which I hope we can solve in the next national elections. And the responsible Minister must leave yesterday”, stressed the candidate for the president of the PASoK, Pavlos Geroulanos.
