EU wins double in men’s and women’s 4x400m relay

Paris. The United States claimed double gold in the men’s and women’s 4×400-metre relay at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, with runner Gabby Thomas, who previously won the 200-metre and 4×100-metre relays, finishing with three titles at the summer event.

She was the most decorated athlete on the purple track at the Stade de France, where Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Rai Benjamin, both champions in the 400-metre hurdles, won a second Parisian gold with the relay on Saturday.

Benjamin teamed up with Christopher Bailey, Vernon Norwood and Bryce Deadmon to finish in a new Olympic record time of 2:54.43, ahead of Botswana, led by Letsile Tebogo (2:54.53, silver), and Great Britain (2:55.53, bronze).

Next up was the women’s relay race, with a particularly strong quartet, with Shamier Little and Alexis Holmes accompanying McLaughlin-Levrone and Gabby Thomas.

The Americans stopped the clock at 3 minutes 15 seconds and 27 hundredths, beating the Netherlands’ Femke Bol (3:19.50, silver) and Great Britain (3:19.72).

She came close to breaking the Soviet Union’s world record (3:15.17 in 1988), which the Americans were ten-hundredths of a second behind.

With only the women’s marathon to close the Olympic Games, the United States has been the absolute dominator of this edition, with 13 golds, 11 silvers and 9 bronzes so far, for a total of 33 medals.
