The 2024 Vuelta a España will be held from August 17 to September 8. As a novelty, in this edition, the Spanish tour celebrates its first three stages entirely in Portugal. A short tour of the neighbouring country before entering Spanish territory through Extremadura. On paper, The fight for the General is more open than ever. For one reason or another, many of the big names in the peloton have crashed out this year. This opens up the possibilities for those riders in the theoretical second row, who have the chance to add to their list of achievements with a Grand Tour.
A priori, The big favorite is Primoz Roglic. Especially since the Slovenian already knows what it is like to win the Vuelta three times. However, his participation in the Spanish race was in doubt until the last moment, since A fall in the Tour de France led to the belief that he would not be ready in time for the start in Lisbon. Finally, his team, Red Bull-Bora, has confirmed his name among the eight riders who will travel to Spain. Although it is not known what physical condition he will be in when he gets on the bike, his name is the most important of all those who make up the peloton.
Next to him, Sepp Kuss should also be placed. Above all, because he travels to Spain with the mission of defend the red jersey won last yearFor the first time in his career, the American has the title of team leader. And not just any team, but one of the best-oiled machines in the international peloton at his disposal: Visma-Lease a Bike. UAE has opted for the double ace of Joao Almeida and Adam Yateswhile Movistar has another double-headed team in Enric Mas and Nairo Quintana. Richard Carapaz, Carlos Rodríguez and Mikel Landa are other contenders for the red jersey.
Which teams are competing in the 2024 Vuelta a España?
A total of 22 teams are taking part in the 2024 Vuelta a España. This is, the 18 that have UCI WorldTour category plus the two best from the UCI ProTeams (Lotto Destny and Israel Premier Tech). In addition, the organization has two places that it can award at its discretion in the form of an invitation. Two Spanish teams have been chosen: Kern Pharma and Euskaltel Euskadi.
Currently, there are four Spanish teams in the ProTeams category. Therefore, The Vuelta has a rotation policy in which it changes invited teams each year. Thus, if in 2023 the chosen ones were Burgos BH and Caja Rural, this year it is the turn of Kern Pharma, which is competing in its second Vuelta, and Euskaltel, which is participating in its third. It is important to bear in mind that, despite sharing names and colours, the current Euskaltel Euskadi is not the same structure that dyed the roads orange between 1994 and 2012.
