iPhone: A major change for all users

The Apple brand had recently reached an agreement with the EU concerning the opening of its NFC chip, allowing contactless payment using the iPhone, to the competition. This will take effect with iOS18.1…

This fall, a big change will take place for all iPhone users: they will be able to pay with their iPhone using a payment application that competes with Apple Pay, as explained by the English-language media The Verge.

We actually knew that such a change would take place on the iPhone, since an agreement had been reached between the brand and the European Union within the framework of the Digital Markets Act.

But it’s only now that we know that the “tap to pay” technology will finally open up to competition, whether for in-store payment, but also for a whole bunch of other uses linked to the NFC chip such as car keys or loyalty cards. Developers will however have to conclude a commercial agreement with Apple.

But this is where a certain irony is felt: if it is with iOS 18.1 that NFC technology opens up to competition for the Cupertino firm, this does not concern developers from all countries. And for the moment, no European country is concerned!

Ironic when we know that it is precisely Europe that is at the origin of this change! However, there is no doubt that change will also arrive within our borders when the time comes.
