Ajax defended a 1-0 lead in Amsterdam on Thursday night thanks to a goal by Steven Berghuis in Athens. In the return match, Ajax suffered a setback when Panathinaikos took the lead via Tetê in the 89th minute. This forced extra time in the Johan Cruijff ArenA. After 120 minutes, the score was still equal over the two matches, meaning both teams were preparing for penalties. Ajax had several chances to decide the penalty series, but failed. In the end, it was Anton Gaaei who shot the winning shot into the net: 13-12.
