Thai court dismisses Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin

BangkokThailand’s Constitutional Court on Wednesday dismissed Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and his entire government for ethical misconduct in a new political-judicial turn in this kingdom a week after the forced dissolution of the main opposition party.

Lawmakers will meet on Friday at 10:00 a.m. to find a successor, parliament announced on Wednesday.

The ruling coalition is expected to announce its candidate on Thursday after a meeting in the morning.

Politics in the Southeast Asian country have been plagued by two decades of chronic instability, marked by coups, street protests and court decisions, partly fuelled by the long-running feud between the military, royalist elites and progressive parties such as Srettha’s Pheu Thai.

In fact, the complaint against the prime minister, less than a year into office, was filed by a group of former senators appointed by Thailand’s former military junta.

The high court judges ruled 5-4 that Srettha had breached ethics rules by appointing a lawyer with a corruption conviction as a cabinet minister.
