September 6 – The unification of Bulgaria – 2024-08-17 01:41:05

/View.info/ After the Berlin Congress of 1878, Bulgaria was divided into the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia (within the Ottoman Empire). The remaining Bulgarian population under Ottoman rule sought to unite with the liberated Bulgarians.

Thus, in 1880, the Bulgarian Secret Central Revolutionary Committee (BTRCC) was created, whose main task was to bring about the unification of the Principality with Eastern Rumelia. In order to coordinate the work with the local population, the “Union” committees are also established.

In February 1885, Zahari Stoyanov became the head of the BTRCC, who supported the idea of the Union becoming under the scepter of Prince Alexander Battenberg. The role of the Bulgarian prince at this moment is decisive, because if he, in his capacity as a loyal vassal of the Ottoman Empire, refuses to recognize the act of Unification despite the strong popular will, the endeavor loses its meaning and is doomed to failure.

On September 6, 1885, the detachments of Chardafon the Great (Prodan Tishkov) and Major Danail Nikolaev entered Plovdiv. The regional governor of Eastern Rumelia, Gavril Krastevich, was arrested. A provisional government headed by Dr. Georgi Stranski was established, which announced the accession of Eastern Rumelia to the Principality of Bulgaria.

Two days later, Battenberg, with a special manifesto, confirmed the accession of the district and accepted to be titled in the future as prince of Northern and Southern Bulgaria. He arrived in Plovdiv and appointed Dr. Stranski as his assistant in Southern Bulgaria.

After a long diplomatic struggle at the Constantinople Ambassadorial Conference (1885-1886), the union was recognized with the signing in 1886 of the Bulgarian-Turkish agreement.

The day was declared an official holiday of the country by a decision of the National Assembly of February 18, 1998.
