Turkish Stream talks suspended, Russian minister denies – 2024-08-17 01:37:28

/ world today news/ The discussion of the “Turkish Stream” project will be stopped due to the termination of the activities of the Russia-Turkey intergovernmental commission, a source familiar with the progress of the negotiations revealed to TASS. At the same time, a Russian minister tried to refute this.

Earlier today, the Russian government announced sanctions against Turkey over the downing of a Russian jet over Syria last month. Among the sanctions is the suspension of the activity of the commission in question, although the Turkish Stream project was not included in the sanctions list. But the negotiations for signing an agreement on “Turkish Stream” were conducted precisely within the framework of this commission.

The press offices of the Ministry of Energy and Gazprom refrain from commenting on the matter.

Until now, it was expected that the intergovernmental agreement on “Turkish Stream” could be signed as early as this month or next. At the same time, Russia considers it correct to sign an agreement on two sections of the “stream” – one for the Turkish market and the other for the European market. In turn, Turkey insisted on the signing of an agreement on only one section (for its internal market), and on the other to reach an agreement at a later stage.

The deadlines for the project were postponed, the last deadline accepted by the Russian side was the end of 2017.

“Turkish Stream” became relevant at the end of 2014, after our country refused to participate in “South Stream” with the argument that it does not meet European rules.

At the same time, the Russian Minister of Economic Development, Alexey Ulyukaev, stated after the TASS report that the sanctions introduced against Turkey do not mean the suspension of the Turkish Stream project, as well as the construction project of the Akuyu NPP in Turkey.

“As for the big investment projects, no decisions have been made to freeze them,” he assured. The implementation of the Turkish Stream and Akuyu NPP projects depend on the business entities engaged in them, the minister added. /TASS
