“These defendants took advantage of Mr. Perry’s addiction problems to make a living. They knew what they were doing wrong. They knew what they were doing putting Mr. Perry in a big risk, but they did it anyway,” said United States Attorney Martin Estrada.
The five accused include two doctors and an actor’s assistant.
“Ultimately, these defendants were more interested in profiting from Mr. Perry than looking out for his well-being.”
One of the doctors, Salvador Plasencia, faces up to 120 years in federal prison, Estrada said.
Perry was found dead in a bathtub at his home in Los Angeles on October 28 last year.
The section, published in December, found that Perry’s blood contained ketamine in the amount used to administer general anesthesia during surgery.
Los Angeles police said in May they were working with the US Drug Enforcement Administration and the US Postal Inspection Service to determine why the 54-year-old had so much surgical anesthetic in his system.
People close to Perry told coroner’s office investigators that he underwent ketamine infusion therapy.
Perry has struggled with addiction for years, starting when he starred on Friends and became one of the biggest TV stars of his generation playing Chandler Bing.
