If the life line of BMW M5 sedans has been uninterrupted since 1984, M5 Touring vehicles are a rare breed! In the entire history of the model, there were only two generations of five-door versions: the BMW M5 Touring E34 series (1992-1995) was released in 891 copies, and station wagons of the E61 generation (2007- 2010) to do. a little more – only 1025 units.
After that, the BMW M division again rejected the idea of making “charged” station wagons, giving preference to more popular crossovers. However, two years ago a young station wagon entered the market BMW M3 on tour. Apparently, the market accepted it well, because now the cargo-passenger BMW M5 is presented – the third one in history.
Technically, the five-door coded G99 is fully integrated with the recently introduced sedan G90. The hybrid power plant includes a biturbo V8 4.4 engine (585 hp, 750 Nm) and an electric motor (197 hp, 280 Nm), built into an eight-speed automatic transmission. The maximum output of the system is 727 hp. and 1000 Nm. Although it can only be achieved with a charged traction battery.
It is installed under the floor of the cabin, its effective capacity of 18.6 kWh should be enough for 67 km in electric mode (up to 140 km / h). M xDrive all-wheel drive transmission with clutch on the front axle and active rear differential. However, like the basic sedan, the station wagon has a rear-wheel drive mode, in which not only the clutch is disabled, but also the stabilization system.
The BMW M5 station wagon was, as expected, even heavier than the sedan: 2475 kg in running order compared to 2435 kg! And the total permissible weight was three tons higher: 3050 kg instead of 2940 kg. Thus, the indicated acceleration time to “hundreds” increased from 3.5 to 3.6 s. The electronically limited top speed remains unchanged: 250 km/h as standard and 305 km/h with the optional M driver package.
In terms of passenger capacity, the M5 station wagon has a volume of 500 litres, although the standard Round five series designed for 570 liters. And with the rear bench folded down, the compartment holds 1630 liters instead of 1700 litres. By the way, for all BMW M5 (including the sedan) you can order a factory tow bar, with which you can tow trailers weighing up to two tons.
Sales of the BMW M5 Touring will begin in November. In addition, the company relies not only on the traditional European market for station wagons, but also on deliveries abroad: the five main markets for the model include Germany, England, Switzerland, USA and Canada! In its home country, Touring will cost from 146 thousand euros against 144 thousand for a sedan.
