Oropouche virus. Has an American virus spread by midges reached Europe?

The Oropouche virus has reached Europe. According to TVN 24, 19 cases of infection with the virus originating from the Amazon have been recorded in Europe – this is confirmed by data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).

Oropouche virus in Europe. What are the symptoms of infection with the virus? Where does it occur?

Symptoms of infection with the Amazon virus include: fever with headache, nausea, vomiting, muscle and joint pain. Cases of infection were recorded in June and July. The virus reached Spain (12 cases), Italy (5) and Germany (2). Most of the sick had previously visited Cuba, one – Brazil.

— Oropouche fever is a zoonotic disease caused by the Oropouche virus (OROV). To date, OROV outbreaks have been reported in several countries in South America, Central America, and the Caribbean; they have occurred in Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Peru, and most recently in Cuba. Since January, more than eight thousand cases have been reported in these areas — we read in an article about the virus on the TVN 24 website.

As we can read in a statement from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, the risk of infection with the Oropouche virus for citizens traveling or living in risk areas — i.e. South and Central America and the Caribbean — is currently assessed as moderate. Importantly, however, the risk increases in the case of visiting areas heavily affected by the epidemic, especially in the northern states of Brazil and the Amazon region. In addition, people who do not take appropriate personal protective measures are particularly at risk.
