This Chinese car is the second import king in Indonesia, just behind Toyota

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Indonesian Automobile Industry Association (Gaikindo) released figures for car imports between January and July 2024. As a result, it is clear that the Chinese brand BYD, which has just entered Indonesia, has being an ‘importer’ of cars for the past two months. In fact, BYD’s two-month imports beat the import numbers for all car brands in Indonesia, except for Toyota.

In July 2024, BYD imported 2,869 cars. In fact, in June 2024 imports will be even more, that is 3,599 units and will even be the ones with the largest imports in that month. BYD’s two-month imports reached 6,488 units or equal to 12.7% of Indonesia’s car imports from this brand.

Through 2024, BYD’s imports will be second. The ranking of the largest number of car imports is led by Toyota, which has imported 17,145 units since the beginning of 2024.

BYD imports come from 3 lines released in Indonesia, namely BYD Dolphin, Atto 3 and Seal. All three of these products were imported whole or completely built (CBU) from China.

Luther T Pandjaitan as the Marketing Head of PT BYD Motor Indonesia revealed that his party is still importing their cars.

“We are still importing CBU, there will be a guarantee to start production at the end of 2025, now that the factory is built in Subang,” Luther told CNBC Indonesia, Thursday (15/8/2024 ).

Compared to brands that have been in Indonesia for decades, such as Mitsubishi, Daihatsu, Suzuki and Honda, BYD imports are recorded to be higher.

In the third position, Suzuki’s imports last month were much lower with 928 units, then Mazda was in fourth place with imports of 403 units and Mitsubishi was in fifth position with imports of 287 units .
