Online messaging giant WhatsApp is putting an end to screenshots of profile pictures on iPhone. On Android, this has already been impossible since April. With this new measure, The service intends to better protect the privacy of its users. In particular against the use of foreign profile pictures for criminal purposes. For example, to harass users or practice identity theft.

A few years ago, the service had already removed the option allowing users to download and save other users’ profile pictures.

Blocking screenshots, however, does not offer 100% protection. It is still possible to take other profile pictures in the contact information, but only in a smaller format.

In the WhatsApp web app for PC and Mac
it is still possible to take screenshots of other users’ profile pictures in large format.

The app wants to know its users’ email addresses

Recently, WhatsApp has introduced an additional protection to protect its own user account from outside access. Users can now register their email address. This function serves as additional protection so that they can identify themselves as the owner of the WhatsApp account. Until now, this was only possible via the telephone number.

One reason for email verification may be, among other things, that users want to install Messenger on a new phone. If the mobile phone reception is poor, users do not need to wait for a verification code via SMS, but can have it sent to the email address they registered on the app.

For years now, WhatsApp is the most popular messaging service. There are no ads, the app is tied to the user’s phone number rather than a profile. Messages are protected by end-to-end encryption, meaning they are only visible in plain text on the devices of the users concerned, but not to the service. WhatsApp developers regularly release new features.
