The report was initiated by the Bulgarian MEP and today it received the support of all parliamentary groups during the first reading of the proposed project. During its presentation, she emphasized that additional opportunities should be sought at the European level and with a European approach for the development of these regions for the next financial period. The aim is to implement the EU’s cohesion policy to equalize living standards in the specific living conditions of these regions, to allocate targeted funds, especially for underdeveloped mountain regions.
According to Yotova’s report, EU investments should primarily focus on creating employment by supporting small and medium-sized enterprises, introducing and developing dual training. European aid must compensate for the difficult accessibility and conditions that make business in mountainous regions difficult. The mountains present opportunities not only for agriculture and tourism, but also for renewable energy based on water resources, wind, solar and biomass. The main emphasis in the proposals is environmental protection and adaptation to climate change. In the arguments for her report, Iliana Yotova emphasized the demographic collapse that affects the whole of Europe, especially in the underdeveloped mountain regions. “There is no way to keep the active and young people if we do not build good communications and do not additionally finance broadband Internet,” she added. . The main goal of the initiative of the Bulgarian MEP is not only a special program for the development of the mountain regions, but also a comprehensive strategy, with specific legislative proposals of the EC.
At the beginning of February, Iliana Yotova will present a comprehensive study on the state and prospects for development of the mountain regions in Bulgaria.
The report will be voted on in the Regional Development Committee in March and is expected to enter the EP plenary in May or June.
