Puerto Martina Baar: The owners of a bar in Oleiros close down during the August bank holiday, fed up with the holidaymakers from the plateau | Gastronomy: recipes, restaurants and drinks

“After the latest wave of expressions such as: Give me 2 Barcelos colas and 4 glasses. You will have a tortilla pincho to go with the coffee, which I can’t eat on its own. Apart from macaroni with meat and octopus pie you will have other pinchos, since I am celiac and I can’t eat that. And in view of the imminent arrival of the long weekend on August 15, where if a bomb falls on Mera there will be no fools left on the plateau, we have decided to close Puerto Martina Baar between the dates of August 12 and 19. As we said before, we are tired of the arrogance that these people have and we do not want to distort the initial project for which it was conceived. We apologize for the inconvenience and we hope that from the 20th onwards the panorama will be somewhat more open.” With this message on the social network Facebook The owners of the Puerto Martina Bar, on Mera beach (Oleiros, A Coruña), have had enough of the impertinence of holidaymakers and have decided to close down during one of the long weekends, the Assumption, with the most trips to coastal areas of the year.

Even before the month of August began, through the same communication channel, The business owners issued the following warning:: “Tomorrow is August 1st and we, who are organized and believe that this place is going to be packed with people from the Mera area who always say ‘what do you have for a pint’, want to make a number of points clear: To start with, Puerto Martina Baar is not a summer beach bar, we open 365 days a year at 7.30 in the morning”, nor do we “have a kitchen, but we offer a pint with an aperitif until 2.30 pm”. In the afternoon, as they clarify in the message, “we don’t serve potatoes or olives or anything like that”. Among the benefits of the place, as they explain, “beers cost 2 euros and drinks 4 on one of the best terraces in Mera”. And they add that “it’s what we can offer you, but we never put up any obstacles for anyone to order food from another place and eat it at ours”. And they continue that “it is for this reason and for other reasons, which we are not going to expose so as not to hurt anyone, that we want this month of August when most of our friends are on vacation, to be able to preserve the essence of what our place was in winter and not lose the space that each one had, summer is 2 months and you have to enjoy it and if you were there in winter you have to be there in summer”. They end the message saying: “We live all year where you spend your summers”. A phrase that for them “is above what the Constitution says”.

Despite this reminder, the owners of the establishment have decided to close for a few days, longing for the moment when they can regain their local clientele.

Oleiros is the Galician municipality with the highest per capita income, ahead of A Coruña and Santiago. Not in vain, this town is located close to Arteixo, where the headquarters of Inditex are located and where many of the textile giant’s executives have their residence. According to the latest data published in February of this year, corresponding to 2021, by the Galician Institute of Statistics (IGE), the income per inhabitant in the aforementioned municipality in 2021 was 22,755 euros, followed by A Coruña, with 20,451 euros, and Santiago, with 19,747 euros.

This newspaper has contacted the owners of the bar, who, “overwhelmed by the impact of the news”, have preferred not to make any statements.
