Negotiations will begin in Switzerland regarding a ceasefire in Sudan without the Sudanese government

The US authorities in Switzerland launched negotiations on a cease-firein Sudan for the US authorities, despite the lack of participation from the Sudanese government, which opposes the mechanism for coordinating the negotiations.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a war between the army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces led by his former deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, who has put the country on the brink of famine.

The US special envoy to Sudan, Tom Perriello, said in a statement, “It’s time to silence the guns!” Shortly after the opening of the meeting, which was held in an undisclosed location for security reasons.

Periello’s call for a ceasefire was echoed by hundreds of Sudanese who demonstrated in front of the United Nations headquarters in Geneva.

All rounds of negotiations that took place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia failed.

At the end of July, Washington invited the two warring sides to a new round of negotiations in Switzerland, hoping to stop the devastating war that has been going on for almost 16 months.

The talks aim to expand the scope of humanitarian aid delivery and create a monitoring and investigation mechanism to ensure the implementation of any agreement.

While the Rapid Support Forces accepted the invitation to participate in the talks, the Sudanese authorities, who are effectively ruled by the military commander, expressed doubts about his equipment and expressed disagreement with him. the United States in relation to the participants.

US State Department spokesman Vedant Patel said in a statement to reporters, “We have emphasized that it is their responsibility to attend, and we will continue to do so. “
