Colts announce next steps for expansion in Germany and Austria

Former Colt Björn Werner to serve as official team ambassador Colts Communications

The Indianapolis Colts today announced next steps toward their international expansion to the countries of Germany and Austria, including:

Partnership with Björn Werner & collaboration with Bromance Sports. Björn Werner, former Colts linebacker (2013-15) and co-founder of German media company Bromance Sports, will serve as the official Colts Ambassador in Germany and Austria.

Since his NFL playing career, Werner has become one of the most prominent broadcasters and experts on American football in Europe. He serves as an NFL color analyst for RTL Television in Germany, as co-host of “Bromance Podcast,” the number one German-language NFL podcast, and is co-owner and sports director of the Berlin Thunder of the European League of Football.

In the role of Colts Ambassador, Werner will promote the Colts brand in these countries, make appearances on behalf of the team, create authentic connections with new and current fans and serve as an advisor for the team’s overall business and marketing strategy. What’s more, Bromance Sports will partner with the Colts to create original digital content for these regions.

“Everyone in Germany knows my deep passion for American football, so I’m so proud and excited to rejoin my former team to represent the Horseshoe in Germany and beyond,” said Werner. “Not only will we introduce the great tradition and history of the Colts to Germany and Europe, but we will continue to grow our game and give more people the opportunity to learn and play the sport around the world.”

Colts Director of International. To oversee the Colts international expansion, the team also hired Ben Guerrero as the team’s first-ever Director of International.

Guerrero joins the Colts from the NHL’s Seattle Kraken, where he served as vice president of Communications & Digital Content (2021-24). Prior to his tenure with the Kraken, he served as director of communications for the San Jose Sharks (2013-2021), manager of media relations for the Washington Capitals (2011-13) and marketing & public affairs assistant for the San Jose Giants (2009-2011). He earned a bachelor’s degree in organizational communication at California State University, Chico.

The Colts announced their plan to expand internationally after their acceptance into the NFL’s Global Markets Program (GMP) this past March. Launched in 2022, GMP grants NFL clubs access to international markets as part of a long-term effort to drive NFL fan growth beyond the United States.

Future plans include introducing fan engagement, business development and other marketing initiatives in the two countries; building access to Colts broadcasts; promoting opportunities for young people to learn and participate in the game, including growing flag football, and much more.
