Arlington man shoots wife, then dies in fire he started

A man died from his injuries after starting a fire in his backyard and firing a gun at his wife in Arlington, police said.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 800 block of Connally Terrace about 5:45 p.m. Monday, police said. As officers were on their way to the scene, they were told a fire had started in the backyard of the property and was spreading to the home.

Responding officers found a 61-year-old woman who had been grazed by a bullet. She told officers that her husband, who had been dealing with physical and mental health issues, started a fire in the backyard. Police did not release the identity of the man or the woman.

When she told him to put out the fire, he grabbed a gun and shot her, police said. She went to a neighbor’s house and asked them to call 911. Her injuries were not life-threatening.

Police found the 61-year-old man under a pile of burning brush in the backyard. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition due to severe burns. Hospital staff told police Tuesday morning that the man had died.

One of the officers who found the man suffered minor burns, but police said he was released from the hospital Monday night and was doing well.
