Last year, the extensive revitalization of the Riegro Gardens in Prague, which are a heritage-protected immovable cultural monument, was completed. The southern, western and northern parts of the park underwent modernization. The modernization took place in terms of architecture and landscape. There is no lack of focus on the perfect view of Petřín and Prague Castle.

“The circuits of the road system are newly stabilized and reconstructed, including a smart solution to the waterlogging of all rainwater within this part of the park, the theme of the main iconic view, which opens onto Petřín and Prague Castle, is developed in landscape terms. New rock outcrops and a new informal rock sandstone amphitheater were created. “Extensive installations have been implemented in the southern, western and northern parts of the park, including the main view following the original composition of the prominent landscape architect of the First Republic, Leopold Baťek,” says landscape architect Matouš Jebavý about his work.

“All parts of the slopes of the park are newly planted. The park blossomed with 25,000 newly planted bulbs. Riegrovy Sady is now directly connected to the neighboring Rajská zahrada park. All historic buildings were reconstructed and restored – the Vozová gate, historic staircases, retaining walls, stairs with stylized tree stumps, a historic drinking fountain and a cast-iron historic pump. New park furniture was also newly installed. The park, including the main viewing area of Prague Castle, is widely used by hundreds of visitors, enjoying the unique views of the city,” he adds.

The resulting revitalization, which will certainly find a few detractors, looks pleasant, timeless and, above all, natural. The paths, new small elements and the amphitheater try to naturally blend in with the surroundings and not stand out. The park will thus attract more and more visitors thanks to the lush greenery, good climate and excellent view of Prague. The project was submitted to the Czech Architecture Prize, where it did not make it to the finals.
