Dynamo Kyiv Triumphs 2-0 Over Rangers: Shovkovsky’s Post-Match Insights and Reflections on a Crucial Champions League Victory

Last Tuesday, August 13, in the second leg of the 3rd qualifying round Champions League Kyiv”Dynamo“defeated the local in Glasgow with a score of 2:0”Rangers“and, based on the sum of two meetings (1:1, 2:0), they reached the next stage of the competition. We bring to your attention the press conference after the match of the head coach of the Ukrainian team, Alexander Shovkovsky.

Alexander Shovkovsky

– First of all, I congratulate the Dynamo fans on their victory. A very important victory, very important emotions for our country, for our fans.

We knew very well what a good team we had to play against today, we understood that it would not be easy, that there would be pressure from the audience. But we also understood that we had nowhere to go back, that we had our own tasks, and that the game would be very difficult. We were ready for this, and I think it was important to deal with the opponent’s pressure from the first minutes, and then to feel the understanding and rhythm of the game. They also told the boys that they had to play football. There may be some incentives, but don’t take them in, play to the end and be ready for any course of events.

– Two jokers worked – Pikhalyonok and Voloshin, who came on as substitutes in the second half. What did you tell them when you let them out on the field?

– Of course, it is much easier to play when you have a numerical advantage. We tried to increase the pressure from the flanks so that we had speed and we understood the creativity of the players who came on as substitutes. In addition, I felt that small changes were needed to make certain changes to the actions of our players. The very thing I told them will remain between us.

Yes, the substitutes worked, but that is not what is important, but because the players were ready to go on the field and strengthen the game, which they did, in principle, help us to have a good achieve a result.

– Is this the most important victory in your coaching career so far?

– Of course, this is an important victory for us. But for now, this is history, and we must move on. It is only by looking forward, looking forward to the future, that we develop and move forward.

– Your colleague Philippe Clement said that a red card for a Rangers player was the worst refereeing decision he had seen in his 30 years of coaching. What do you say about this?

“I’ve seen worse red cards in my career. But today there are some rules that every team adheres to. And if there is a fight in the air and one player is hit in the face, this is a yellow card at the very least.

It wasn’t a straight red card for the Rangers player – it was a second yellow. And in this case, perhaps, the feeling of the players was playing a cruel joke on the owners. The Rangers players were motivated, you could see it yourself, sometimes it seemed to me that they even acted aggressively. And I can understand this too, because this is football, there is a desire to win, and it is in the blood. If you look at history, the desire to win is in the blood of the Scots, just like the Ukrainians. But when you enter big competitions as a team, players have to satisfy their emotions, especially if you have a yellow card, you have to be more careful and careful.
