On August 14th at 8:30 a.m. the Seminar “Gender Perspective and Cancer” will be held at the UNAB Campus Concepción Auditorium. This event, organized by the Save the World Today Foundation, whose mission is to transform patients into protagonists of their oncological process, seeks to empower the new generations to lead the change in the fight against cancer, using triple negative breast cancer as an example from a gender perspective.
This seminar aims to raise awareness and provide tools to the population, especially young women, regarding breast cancer and triple negative breast cancer. According to a recent study by the Catholic University of Chile, 11% of patients with breast cancer have the triple negative breast cancer subtype (TNBC), which translates into 600 cases diagnosed per year with this pathology in the country.
Talia Villanueva, president of the Foundation, highlighted the importance of developing this type of event: “We want to bring the community closer to a topic that concerns us all. The idea of early involvement is to generate early detection of breast cancer and break stereotypes. One of them is precisely that this disease only affects older women.”
As part of the activity, the Women for a Ribbon Foundation will be present at the seminar and will provide testimony on the countless actions carried out to advocate for these patients, as an example from organized civil society to get the MINSAL to consider this type of cancer with immunotherapy coverage under the modality of high-cost drugs (DAC).
The event represents an opportunity for the university city, which has also recently been incorporated as a City Cancer Challenge city, to connect the population with the different stages of cancer diagnosis and prevention. In this way, they will be able to learn, debate and contribute to the advancement of health from a gender perspective, empowering the new generations to face and overcome the challenges posed by this disease.
Regarding the origin of the Save the World Today Foundation, Villanueva explained that it was created three years ago to support scientific research.
Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in women in Chile. Estimates for 2022 indicate that 5,640 Chilean women were diagnosed and 1,775 died from the disease. This seminar offers an ideal platform to share knowledge, foster dialogue and promote public policies that improve care and outcomes for people affected by cancer.
