Photogallery: Perseids and Northern Lights 2024 | Multimedia | Articles

On August 11, a very bright meteor flew exactly over the Andromeda galaxy (M31) and left behind a long-visible melting trail.

The year 2024 was very favorable for observing the most famous meteor shower. It was partly due to the weather, as the nights were mostly clear, but the moon joined in, which was only visible in the evening as a growing crescent. By a completely fantastic coincidence, the night of August 12 also saw the aurora borealis, and the Perseids literally fell into it. Seeing two atmospheric phenomena that have their roots in space objects is a rare occurrence.
