Is August 15th a day off? What holiday is it?

Celebrated in the Roman Catholic Church on August 15, the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary commemorates the assumption into heaven of the body and soul of the Virgin Mary after her earthly life. Also known as the Day of Our Lady of the Herbs, this holiday has its roots in apocryphal accounts that say that after Mary’s death, the apostles found not her body in the tomb, but only herbs and flowers. Interestingly, the Czechs call this day the Feast of Our Lady of the Spices.

The National Museum in Wrocław reminds us that these records explain why plants are blessed in churches on August 15. On this day, the faithful bring ripe grains, herbs, vegetables and fruit to churches, which are then blessed during Holy Masses. This celebration is a holy day of obligation, which means that believers are obliged to participate in Mass and to refrain from unnecessary work.

Masses are held in military churches throughout the country for the deceased soldiers. Roll Calls of the Fallen are held in cemeteries, and a changing of the guard of honour takes place in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Warsaw, with the participation of the highest state authorities.

August 15 is a day that combines spirituality and patriotism, recalling important aspects of Polish history and culture. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the values that shape our national identity.
