Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam’s Border Guard High Command and China’s National Immigration Administration held talks on August 12 on implementing an agreement on land border management.

The agreement on establishing a three-tier law enforcement coordination mechanism on border checkpoint control and land border management was reached by the Vietnamese Ministry of Defense and the Chinese Ministry of Public Security.

During the talks in Hanoi, Le Duc Thai, commander of Vietnam’s Border Guard High Command, said that defence and national security cooperation has reaffirmed its role as an important pillar of Vietnam-China relations, contributing to enhancing and deepening the bilateral comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.

The collaboration between the two institutions is a bright spot in defence and security ties, he continued.

Analysing cooperation, he said that this year 286 cross-border exchange programmes, meetings and talks between relevant units have been held, with the participation of 1,682 officials.

The two sides have also worked together in fighting crime, conducted joint patrols, coordinated management of border posts, and played a great role in strengthening solidarity, friendship, and mutual trust and understanding between border authorities and residents of the two countries.

According to the official, Vietnamese relevant forces have coordinated with the Chinese side to handle a total of 518 illegal immigration cases involving 4,436 people so far this year.

He suggested that both sides maintain their cooperation in implementing the above-mentioned agreement as well as the minutes of their talks in Beijing on December 4, 2023.

They should continue to exchange information, especially that related to the fight against transnational and high-tech crimes, terrorists, separatists, reactionaries and drug-related crimes, he said.

He also recommended the establishment of a hotline for crime prevention and control, administrative reform, the construction of smart border gates to facilitate trade between the two countries, the enhancement of exchanges at all levels and the maintenance of twinning models./.
