Gaza: “New Hamas leader wants war to end” – 2024-08-12 19:44:05

Mediators from Egypt and Qatar have told Israeli officials that Hamas leader Yahya Shinuwar wants a cease-fire agreement that would end the war in the Gaza Strip, an Israeli source with knowledge of the matter told CNN.

However, “nobody knows what Bibi wants,” the source said, referring to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by his nickname.

The same source said US officials told their Israeli counterparts that an agreement should be reached immediately to avoid a regional war.

New round of talks

The government of Israel agreed to resume next Thursday, August 15, talks with the aim of declaring a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip and the release of hostages who remain hostages of Hamas, after the intervention of the mediating countries, the USA, Egypt and Qatar , which warned the warring parties that there was “no time to waste and no excuse” for further delays.

The CNN report comes a day after the Israeli bombing of a school in Gaza City where the Israeli military claimed was a “command center” of Hamas “terrorists” killed over 100 people.

At the same time, many analysts believe that the choice of Yahya Sinwar – one of the most wanted persons in Israel, who considers him to be the mastermind of the October 7 attack – for the leadership of Hamas after the assassination of Ismail Haniya in Iran, which was attributed to Israel by his enemies, has made indirect negotiations even more difficult.
