The defeat against Denmark only just overshadows the outstanding Olympic performance of the German handball players. Andreas Wolff and Co. are confident that they will take part in many more finals.
Despite the defeat in the Olympic final against Denmark, Germany’s handball players are looking to the future with great optimism. “We have shown that we have a very good mix and that the young players take on a lot of responsibility. There is still a lot more in it. There is still a lot of potential,” assured left winger Rune Dahmke, who at 31 was one of the oldest in the German Olympic squad.
The team of national coach Alfred Gislason tried to quickly forget the 26:39 defeat in the final. The pride in the outstanding Olympic results against France and Spain was too great for a desolate result to dampen the general spirit of optimism. “We have a team that has a future. That is promising and this will not be the last time that we are in a final,” announced goalkeeper Andreas Wolff.
Since taking office in 2020, Gislason has been forced to rejuvenate the team. “I took a risk. We replaced almost all but two or three players. There was no alternative. Many older players were injured or did not want to play,” said the Icelander, explaining the successful change. Before the Summer Games, no one would have expected that the youngest of all Olympic teams would make it to the sensational final.
At the World Championships in January, the relatively inexperienced German team can once again prove that the gap to the top teams has become smaller and that their consistency has increased. “If we all develop together as we have in the last six months, then there is still a lot of potential and then we might win one or two medals,” said Dahmke.
