After his Olympic exit last week, German tennis star Alexander Zverev has suffered another defeat in the quarterfinals. The Hamburg native lost to Sebastian Korda (USA) 6:7 (5:7), 6:1, 4:6 in the round of the last eight of the ATP Masters in Montreal. He thus missed out on the chance to win his second title in the Canadian metropolis. In Paris, Zverev also failed in the quarterfinals – to the Italian Lorenzo Musetti. Now he was eliminated from the tour during the closing ceremony of the Summer Games.
Korda won the ATP tournament in Washington last weekend and was in good form. After a strong second set, Zverev still had a good chance of winning, but missed the chance for an important break in the third set and then lost his own serve. He was unable to make up for this disadvantage. In 2017, Zverev celebrated his second Masters title in Montreal.
The defeat is a setback in preparation for the US Open in three weeks. In New York, he is aiming for his first Grand Slam title. In Flushing Meadows in 2020, Zverev was only two points away from the title before losing in five sets to Dominic Thiem from Austria.
