Zelensky: Russian forces set fire to the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant – What is Russia’s response – 2024-08-12 00:55:10

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said this evening that Russian forces had started a fire at the Russian-held Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine and that the fire was visible from territory controlled by Kiev.

Radiation indicators were at normal levels, Zelensky stressed.A local official in the Ukrainian city of Nikopol said there were unofficial reports that Russian forces set fire by burning car tires at the cooling towers. He called on the residents to keep calm.

For its part, the Russian administration of the occupied Ukrainian nuclear power plant Zaporizhia announced today that firefighters are working to put out a fire near the plant’s cooling towers, stressing that the fire did not affect the plant at all and had no impact on the plant’s safety .

The Moscow-appointed head of the Zaporizhia region, Yevgeny Balitsky, accused Ukraine of starting the fire by shelling the nearby town of Enerhodar.
