/ world today news/ Ombudsman Maya Manolova will urgently propose to the parliament changes to the Law on the Protection of Agricultural Lands, which would categorically prohibit the exploration and extraction of oil, gas and underground resources in the fertile agricultural lands of Bulgaria.
This was announced by Maya Manolova during her visit today to the Municipality of General Toshevo. She was there at the invitation of the initiative committee “Against gas extraction in the Municipality of General Toshevo”. The Deputy Minister of Environment and Waters Krasimir Zhivkov, as well as experts from RIOSV – Varna, also participated in the meeting with the citizens.
“From my conversations with people I met on the street and from the discussion that just ended, I am absolutely aware that gas will not be produced in General Toshevo. It is important that the institutions also understood it. Huge gaps were pointed out in the EIA report, there are doubts and concerns, first of all about the water of Dobruja, about the soils of Dobruja, about plant species, about “Natura 2000″, about agriculture, about beekeeping. People are absolutely right to be worried, because there are many question marks and this arouses their legitimate concern,” the ombudsman was categorical.
According to Manolova, additional opinions are needed from all responsible institutions, such as the Ministry of Energy, the Basin Directorate, the Ministry of Health, before the final decision is made by RISW – Varna whether or not to allow gas extraction in the region.
“These additional opinions are needed as an even more definitive argument in the event that a refusal to issue a mining permit is proceeded with, so that no one has grounds to sue the state for lost profits,” the ombudsman concluded.
