Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah trains with first team on trip

Trevoh Chalobah is currently training with Chelsea’s first team and his future is likely to lie away from the team.

The centre-back was left out of Enzo Maresca’s squad for the pre-season tour of the United States and has not been in the starting XI since his return to the country earlier this week.

The 25-year-old has only just signed a new long-term contract until November 2022, but the club hierarchy now see Wesley Fofana, Axel Disisi and summer signing Tosin Adarabioyo at right-back.

Top academy prospect Josh Acheampong is also being considered as an alternative to club captain Rhys James and Malo Gusto at right-back.

Romelu Lukaku and Armando Broja are also training with the first team as Chelsea look for a solution before the window closes at the end of this month.

The club’s position is that they do not want to disrupt Maresca’s training and preparation for the new season and disorganise the squad with players who are no longer in their plans, preferring to focus on ensuring their mobility.

Chaloba has turned down several opportunities to leave Chelsea in the past 18 months, including a £25million move to Nottingham Forest last summer.

He made 80 appearances for his boyhood club in all competitions and also had loan spells at Ipswich Town, Huddersfield Town and French club Lorient.

A hamstring injury ruled Chaloba out for most of last season before he was forced into the first team for the final spell of former manager Mauricio Pochettino’s campaign.
