Zelensky admits attack was launched in Kursk to “shift the war” to Russia – DW – 8/10/2024

Today, Saturday (August 10, 2024), Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky admitted for the first time that Ukrainian forces had launched an operation in the Kursk region of Russia. Zelensky stressed that his country is trying to “shift the war” to Russia, which is seeing an attack by Ukrainian forces into the Kursk region, which began on Tuesday.

TASS news agency reported that Artyom Sharov, the representative of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia, said at a press conference today that since the Ukrainian forces entered, “more than 76,000 people have been temporarily evacuated (from Kursk ) to safe places.”

Russia is fighting against thousands of Ukrainian soldiers at a depth of 20 kilometers inside the Kursk region, after the largest attack by Ukraine on Russian territory since the war began in 2022.

The Russian Defense Ministry said on Saturday that “the Armed Forces continue to repel the attempt of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to cross the border,” noting that they used aircraft and artillery to hit Ukrainian forces.

The ministry released footage showing tanks firing at Ukrainian bases in the Kursk region, as well as an air strike. Yesterday, Friday, they confirmed the deployment of additional units in the border area.

The Russian army confirmed on Friday that Kiev forces had reached the city of Sodja, which has a population of 5,500 people and is located about ten kilometers from the border and includes a gas transport station that is still supplying products to Europe, especially Slovakia and Hungary through Ukraine.

The level and number of advances made by the Ukrainian forces that participated in the attack were not known.
